Single motivating purpose

A course I took last year on how to start an online business included this exercise: write down a single phrase that encapsulates what you’re trying to do and why it’s important to you. They called it defining your “single motivating purpose” or SMP. It’s an exercise that tries to get to the heart of why you get up every day and do what you do.

It wasn’t an easy thing for me to do, but I do think it’s useful, especially if you don’t have the expectations of a regular job to define your day for you.

This is my latest iteration:

I practice the principles of comprehensive design in order to support the emergence of a world that works for all humanity and the planet, and to help others enjoy life, suffer less and have hope for the future.

What motivates you and get’s you excited for life?
