Rethinking rethinking

For Buckminster Fuller, rethinking was a constant process, one in which he restated his basic assumptions and built his argument from scratch each time he thought about it.

It was one of his personal disciplines.

I imagine it tried the patience of those he talked to, as his explanations could get lengthy, but it was an important part of how he kept himself honest. It’s also how he kept expanding and integrating his knowledge all his life.

Rethinking is not part of a larger process for understanding a complex problem. It is the process.
