I have a t-shirt, bought when the Mythbusters exhibit came through Denver. It reads “I reject your reality and substitute my own.”
I thought it was an original quote from Adam Savage, but a little research shows that he was quoting Dungeonmaster, a sci-fi movie made in 1984.
Anyway, my thought is that we do this all the time. We reject the perspectives of others because they conflict with ours. Most of the time, we don’t even know we’re doing it; our subconscious filters out offending ideas before we even notice them.
Training yourself to notice worldviews that conflict with your own is a critical skill if you want a strong personal universe. I guess saying flat out that you’re rejecting someone else’s reality is a sign that you’re on the right track.
Trying harder to understand their reality is good next step.
