Preparing for change

Generally speaking, humans don’t like change.

Yet, change is going to happen, and it appears there will be a lot of it in the coming years. How do we prepare for it? Or perhaps more specifically, how do we prepare ourselves for it?

I’m not talking about stockpiling groceries and ammunition, and I’m not talking about electing politicians who claim they can stop change from happening.

I’m talking about staying relevant.

Barring some catastrophic event, the world will keep moving, and those of us who’re not able to deal with the change will simply be left behind. We see it now in parts of the world hit hard when industries like coal imploded or moved away.

A strong personal universe is about comprehensive understanding — seeing the big picture. It’s also about a staying flexible and nimble in your thinking.

Specialists learn what they need to know for their job and are vulnerable when the that job or industry disappears. A comprehensivist is more likely to see what’s coming and can leverage what they know to either stay ahead of the change or act quickly when change catches them.

It’s a good idea to prepare for change. Do it by making yourself capable of changing with the world rather than fighting the change that’s coming.
