My children will do it differently

Of course they will. They’re growing up in a different world than I did: different tools, different opportunities, different dangers, and “different” is happening more quickly every day.

There will be different people too, I suppose, but people are people. They don’t change as quickly as the world does.

Everything seems to point to immense change happening in my children’s lifetimes. The news likes to emphasize the dangers that we face, but I think we’ll find ways to survive and thrive. I’m optimistic that my children and those they are growing up with will find ways to do it differently.

In the midst of all the machines and AI and who know what else, I hope my children will still see the people at the heart of it all, because ultimately, it’s all about the people. There will be people who are taking chances and making change happen, and there will be people who are suffering the consequences of change happening to them.

I think the internet is helping my children see all the world’s people better than I have, better than other generations have. I hope they grow up knowing them as individuals. I hope they see them as equals, as partners in a new world where change is something everyone can embrace.
