Matching reality

In talking about your personal universe, I often say that it needs to be accurate and match reality as best it can.

The thing is, reality is not something we can really grasp to any high degree. The human experience is so limited by our perceptions that we can’t fully understand any part of it, much less the whole thing.

So an accurate understanding of reality is this: we don’t understand it. Or more accurately, we don’t fully understand it.

We’re like the blind men feeling different parts of the elephant and not seeing the whole accurately.

That might sound kind of depressing, but it’s at the heart of keeping an open mind. Once we decide that we know something we stop thinking about it. Recognizing that we don’t know keeps us curious.

It keeps us exploring the elephant.
