There are many ways to make a difference, but they all require doing something. You can’t sit at home in the dark by yourself and make a difference. “To make” is a verb and it means “to create”. We have to create something to make a difference.
It doesn’t have to be a big thing that we create. We can smile at someone and create a little joy in her heart. We can create opportunity for a charity to do it’s work by giving them a little money. Or we can go big and create a whole new industry that changes the way people think about the world.
We use the phrase to say that we want to have a positive effect on something other than us: the people around us or in places far away, our city, our country, the world…
When I was younger, I looked for big projects and ideas that I thought could really make a big difference in the World. I wanted to pour my energy into one big solution that would have a huge impact. Now, I think that we can make a difference in just about everything we do. Go ahead and look for the big-impact stuff, sure, but don’t forget about the little everyday interactions. It’s a human World we’re trying to make better; we can’t forget about the humans.
