Knowing what to do

When you feel a desire to make a difference or make the world better, the hardest thing is not knowing what to do.

Part of the problem may be that you’re not getting specific enough, but more importantly, unless you want to follow someone else’s vision of how to make a difference, you have to create your own vision.

There are a lot of questions that come up:

  • How do you know if something’s meaningful?
  • How do you choose a problem to tackle?
  • What if you waste your whole life doing something that doesn’t matter in the end?
  • What if you end up making things worse than they were before?

The answer lies in asking another question:

What needs doing?

Don’t look for other people’s lists of problems to choose from. Don’t just do something for the sake of doing something. Find out for yourself what needs doing.

It’s a very personal question, and it will likely take some time to get to an answer. But that’s time and effort well-spent because you will eventually figure out what you have to offer that no one else can.

That’s where the impact is.
