There is a lot of talk about how various groups are discriminated against.
People in power tend to say “these groups should not be given special treatment just because they belong to group X.” And the people seeking anti-discrimination laws often say “we’re not asking for special treatment, just a level playing field.”
A helpful way I’ve found to think about this is to realize that discrimination goes both ways. You can discriminate against someone, and you can discriminate for someone.
The people in power often don’t see where they are being discriminated for, whether its wealth accumulated over generations of higher incomes or how they’re automatically treated with respect at a coffee shop, regardless of whether they’ve bought something.
It’s a good exercise to consider the ways you have likely been discriminated for.
