Creating universes

People are great at creating universes.

Story tellers have been doing it for hundreds of years. Some of the best known ones include J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, C.S. Lewis’s Narnia, George R.R. Martin’s Westeros and George Lucas’s Galaxy far, far away, but there are many, many fiction writers that have created universes in which their stories play out.

One of the great things about creating a universe of your own is that you can ensure that it has all the elements you need to tell a good story. Need faster than light travel? You got it. Need truly evil aliens? Check!

The same is true for the personal universes we create for ourselves. Our personal universes contain what we need to tell our personal stories. You need to be a victim to justify your actions? You got it. Need guardian angels to make sense of your good fortune? Check!

It can be difficult to see yourself clearly, but the stories we tell about ourselves — good or bad — can help show us how we have constructed our personal universe to accommodate them.
