Challenges

A challenge — in the context of your personal universe — is an idea, metaphor, perspective, or other artifact that causes you to rethink something.

I say it “causes you to rethink”, but it can’t make you to do anything you’re not willing to do. For many people, their response to a challenge is to dig in and start defending what they know. For many, change is scary and it’s not at all uncommon to see people burying their heads in the sand, like the proverbial ostrich (although ostriches don’t actually do that).

The world is changing fast. We’re faced with these challenges to what we know all the time by the news or ideas our kids bring home with them. We can ignore them, refuse to believe them, or rethink them.

We need to be constantly rethinking what we know, or the world is going to catch us by surprise.

And surprises aren’t always the fun kind.
