Better off

Shortly before she died, my mother told me that she wanted to get out of our way.

She said that her death would allow me and my sisters to live our lives without having to worry about her or take care of her. In short, it was her opinion that we would be better off without her.

I can see her logic. My sisters and I wouldn’t have to fly down any more when she got sick. We could focus more on our own families. We might have a bit more free time without concern for her well-being.

But I don’t think we’re better off now that she’s gone.

Our lives may be a bit simpler, but at the expense of the richness that she brought to our lives. I would rather have the more complicated life with her in it.
